On Saturday, July 13, designer brand Pretty Snake joined Knit Club, Providence’s only yarn store and knitting community, to celebrate the grand opening of their dual store front on Brook Street.

Knit Club, originally curated by designer DEGEN, saw its beginnings as an online forum where fellow knitters and fashionistas could share, learn and teach their craft to like-minded artists. Members receive free access to Zoom knitting circles, knit-along events and a feed of the best advice for any “knit-uation.” For $5 a month, members can unlock video and written tutorials.

Lindsay Degen, owner of Knit Club, believes that integrating their brand into the vibrant Providence community will contribute to the city’s creativity, especially alongside Pretty Snake.

“We are thrilled to expand our presence to be a part of this vibrant creative community,” says Degen. “Every great city should have a great yarn store.”

Knit Club’s yarn comes in several colors and prints. Cozy socks are also available for purchase.

Designer and Providence resident Joseph Aaron Segal has sold Pretty Snake apparel in large retail stores such as Urban Outfitters and ModCloth since the brand’s conception in 2009. Being a contestant on “Project Runway” season eleven, followed by having experience working with outfitted celebrities like Trixie Mattel, landed Segal’s designs on many TV shows, films and local retail pillars.

While Pretty Snake clothing has been produced and designed out of Providence for many years, this brick and mortar co-location is the first of its kind.

“Opening a brick and mortar location in Providence has been a dream since I started Pretty Snake,” says Segal, who is also a teacher of knitting and textiles at Rhode Island School of Design.

The storefront serves as a “community first” experience, featuring an array of yarns, knitting tools, swag, evolving art installations, shoppable vignettes and more. Both Knit Club and Pretty Snake have been “pouring [their] heart and soul” into their new headquarters at 142-144 Brook Street.

Knit Club is open Friday from 2–6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11–6 p.m.; Pretty Snake is open Friday from noon–6 p.m., Satuarday from 11–6 p.m. and by appointment.
