NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — The Narragansett Town Council approved the first reading of an updated ordinance for the “Affordable Housing Trust Collaborative” last week. This motion comes in preparation for a proposed $3 million bond to support the town’s affordable housing initiatives.
“We compared it to eight different municipalities: Hopkinton, Warren, East Greenwich, Westerly, South Kingstown, Richmond, and Providence,” said Councillor Susan Cicilline-Buonanno, who led the effort. “We tried to incorporate appropriate clarifications on the language so it would be helpful and useful.”
According to the agenda, the updated language of the ordinance is intended to facilitate the operation of the trust with the potential addition of housing bond proceeds.
Under the amendment included on last Monday’s agenda, the ordinance establishes an Affordable Housing Trust aimed at acquiring land and buildings to provide affordable housing and meet the town’s 10% affordable housing goal mandated by the Low and Moderate Income Housing Act.
