A Patriotic duty in Seekonk

Despite all of the chaos last week following an intense thunderstorm, Seekonk police say Sgt. Keith Perry noticed the U.S. Flag at the high school was badly damaged and hanging upside down by only one grommet. He lowered and secured the flag with dignity and respect. The late-night storm knocked down several trees around the high school and throughout the area, with hundreds losing power. It was determined a microburst — straight line winds — hit Seekonk while neighboring Rehoboth saw a low-grade tornado.

Keeping an eye on religion, worldwide

Tiffany Stanley, former Sun Chronicle intern who is now a member of The Associated Press’s global religion coverage team.

Loyal readers of The Sun Chronicle’s weekend Religion section may recognize a familiar byline every now and then. Tiffany Stanley, who was an intern for the newspaper in 2008, is now a member of the global religion team for The Associated Press. When she was with The Sun Chronicle she covered everything from crime to features, but had a special interest, even back then, in religion coverage, keeping up the newspaper’s commitment to the topic after the retirement of award-winning religion writer Gloria LaBounty. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Stanley now lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and two small children. After her stint at The Sun Chronicle, Stanley went on to write for numerous national publications including The Washington Post, The New Republic, The Atlantic, Politico, Washingtonian, and more. Her story “Jackie’s Goodbye,” was a finalist for the National Magazine Award for Public Interest and the article was anthologized in The Best American Magazine Writing. It was named one of Longreads’ best of the year.
