Farouk Rajab is named new CEO of Rhode Island Hospitality Association

Q: You’ve got big shoes to fill because Dale is a legend. What are your top priorities for the organization?

Rajab: Dale’s contributions to the hospitality industry, both in Rhode Island and nationally, are her legacy. I was fortunate to work alongside her for six years, including two particularly challenging ones during the pandemic. As board chair during those difficult times, I was constantly reminded that our industry’s core mission is, and always will be, serving our people.

I’m focused on cultivating the next generation of hospitality leaders and fiercely advocating for our industry. This two-pronged approach ensures a pipeline of exceptional talent, while safeguarding the interests of our associates and small businesses when crucial policies and legislation are shaped at local, state, and federal levels.

Q: The last few years have been especially difficult for the hospitality industry. What challenges do you see on the horizon?

Rajab: From pandemics and natural disasters to a constantly changing information landscape, our industry has faced immense challenges. Adding further restrictions to our already strained small businesses and associates only hinders us further. We are still challenged by a labor shortage, rising food costs, and the economy to name a few. We are the cornerstone of our community, and when hospitality suffers, the community feels the impact. We need to work together to ensure this vital industry continues to thrive.

Q: What kind of support does the industry need from lawmakers and policymakers who may be reading this right now?

Rajab: We urge our policymakers to be active listeners and engage in thoughtful discussions on issues and legislation that has a detrimental effect on our industry. We have full confidence that they prioritize the well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Through collaboration, we can establish Rhode Island as a national leader in fostering a thriving small business environment, and a robust workforce.

Q: As you know, Rhode Island is a special place. But what are we missing when it comes to hospitality?

Rajab: I believe in Rhode Island’s hospitality potential! We already boast world-class hotels and restaurants fueled by incredibly talented people. Yesterday afternoon, I spoke to a passionate restaurant owner determined to raise Rhode Island’s culinary reputation to even greater heights. His vision inspires me, and I’m committed to creating an environment where all hospitality professionals can thrive and make their dreams a reality.
