Providence firefighters working to contain scrap metal fire on Allens Avenue

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Fire Department is working to contain and extinguish a scrap metal fire on Allens Avenue.

In a post on Twitter, Chief Derek Silva shared that 30 firefighters were working on the fire.

No injuries were related to the fire at this time, according to officials.

The Providence City Council passed a resolution back in May condemning and calling for the closure of the scrap yard that had also caught fire in April.

The council said that the scrap yard has been the source of “ongoing environmental threats.”

The company that owns the yard, Rhode Island Recycled Metals, has had several issues with the city in the past, with Mayor Brett Smiley’s office issuing a cease and desist order on March 8 because the company was operating the yard without a required license.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management  has been requested to respond and the Hazardous Materials Team is onsite conducting air monitoring.
