EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Fourth of July of is coming early to the city of Providence, with the capital cities fireworks display kicking off this evening at India Point Park.

The event will bring hundreds of people out to the park to enjoy the festivities.

Tonight’s event is set to kick off around 5 p.m., with dozens of food trucks, live music, a beer garden, and more.

“Having a fireworks display over the river is challenging. So in terms of booking the barges and with fireworks cities are really competitive. But we’re lucky to have an incredible vendor that we’re working with again this year. And the logistics….” said Joe Wilson Jr., Director of Art, Culture, and Tourism in Providence.

“Over here in the park security, organizing food trucks, and just making sure that the event runs smoothly. So it is a several month process, but we’re really proud to shepherd this event along with the Providence Tourism Council,” he continued.

While the event kicks off this evening, parking restrictions went into place Tuesday morning.

“No parking zones” were put in place at 6 a.m. today, on portions of India Street, George Cohan Boulevard, Hope Street, and Gano Street.

And traffic restrictions are in place, with Gano Street, a portion of India street, and exit 1a on 195 closing until 11 p.m. tonight.

“You know we really haven’t changed anything from last year. This is such a great location, it’s such a beautiful spot here on the river and having the fireworks display on the scale that we have here – and I said scale people. It’s a big 30 minute firework display over the providence river. So that’s always the star of the show, the fireworks,” said Wilson Jr.

Food trucks are set to open up around 5 p.m., festivities kick off at 6 p.m., and the actual fireworks celebration will begin tonight from 9 to 9:30 p.m.
