Prosecutors have charged Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson with murdering Massey while responding to an emergency call at her home July 6, 2024, saying in court records that he shot her in the face during a tense moment over a pot of water in her home.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC will host a vigil for Sonya Massey this weekend.

Massey was killed in a police-involved shooting in her home in Illinois earlier this month.

The vigil will take place at the Rhode Island State House at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The sheriff’s deputy who fired the shot, Sean Grayson, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and officials misconduct charges.

He has since been fired by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s been reported that Grayson worked for six different departments in four years.

Body camera footage was released Monday, and showed the shooting.

Massey had called for 911 for help because she thought there was an intruder in her home, according to officials.

In the video, after shooting Massey, his partner is heard saying that he’s going to get a medical kit to help help her.

Grayson responded, “Nah, she’s done. You can go get it but that’s a headshot.”

Grayson claims that Massey was going to throw a pot of boiling water on him.

He is currently being held without bound in the Sangamon County Jail.
