UPDATED: Delays, cancellations, and more due to global IT outage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Due to a major IT outage, there are currently 31,000 delays and over 3,000 cancellations at airports across the United States.

A ground delay has now been put into effect until further notice.

CNN has reported that industry experts have said the global tech outages appear to stem from an issue with CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that has Microsoft Windows among its clients.

A CrowdStrike representative has said that they have identified and a fix has been deployed.

The Department, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said they are working with CrowdStrike, Microsoft and our federal, state, local and critical infrastructure partners to fully assess and address system outages.

Major hospitals may also be impacted throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

According to FlightAware, in New England, Logan Airport in Boston currently has 267 delays and 82 cancellations.

Airlines are urging passengers to check your flight status before you arrive at the airport.

Due to a global computer outage affecting airlines, many flights are being delayed or cancelled. Please check with your airline before coming to the airport.

At T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, there’s 5 cancellations so far and 39 delays.

All Providence Emergency System computers are also down.

The Rhode Island DMV will open at noon today. Service Center appointments scheduled through 10 a.m. today are cancelled due to an ongoing global outage that is affecting online & in-person transactions at the RMV and AAA, vehicle inspections and online credit card payments.

Governor Dan McKee has since shared in a tweet that Rhode Island’s 9-11 system is fully operational, but some services may temporarily have longer wait times while they resolve the issue.

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority does not currently have boarding or arrival time information due to the outage.

Some gas stations have also been impacted, including Speedway.

All Social Security offices are closed today to the public.

FedEx has activated contingency plans to mitigate impacts from a global IT outage experienced by a third party software vendor. Potential delays are possible for package deliveries with a commitment of July 19.
